stated that I did not propose to fill up the post of Warden, or second Officer of the Gaol, vacated by W. Hayward, until I should have had an opportunity of communicating with the new Superintendent who was at that time expected from England.

As, however, it appears from Your Lordship's despatch No. 58 of the 3rd March ultimo, that an Officer regularly trained in the convict Prisons of England, has not been appointed to the post of Superintendent, I have advised that it is expedient to defer no longer the filling up of the vacant post of Warden. The new Superintendent will find it advantageous to be received by an Officer fully acquainted with the present condition and regulations of the Prison, and who knows the Chinese language, habits and customs.
